* Biogas is a new term, which involves breath, flatus (intestinal), oral
and other gas generated and contained, especially, in human life activity.
Outlined Activity of JSCBBA
1. Mission
The purposes of Japanese Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Biogas
Analyses (herein after JSCBBA) are to clarify the clinical and patho-physiological
significance for every gas component in breath, or biogas and the realization
of every biogas-analyzer, which measures one or plural components, for
the clinical practice as a non-invasive test manner.
2. History
1) Origin and the present
In 1996, researchers belonging to medical doctor, biochemist, and
gas analyzer developer who were interesting in breath analysis and application
to medical purposes, established “Society of Breath Analysis and Application”
and Meeting was held every 6 months during 2 years. Breath researches for
acetone, isoprene, hydrogen and methane, and ammonia analyzer had been
performed. And at the establishment of JSCBBA, the book titled “Biogas
-Analysis and Significance”(Japanese language) was published, and held
the 1st Scientific Meeting in 1998, and thereafter the Meeting has been
held annually.
In 2004, 7th JSCBBA meeting was firstly joined to Japanese Society
of 13C medical application, which was developed as a fruit and applied
in clinical practice in the detection of urease activity of H.pylori infected
in stomach.
2) Previous Annual Meetings
This year 8th Meeting 2005 will be held in Tokyo under the organizer
of Prof. Kondo, M.D., Ph.D. Followings are the yearly organizers from the
1st Meeting 1998.

4. Present and near future
During almost ten years passed, we have developed many effective
technologies for the clinical test instrument, which are indispensable
for a compact size and simple operation as a bed-side test, and analyzers
described above are now in clinical field to accumulate the data for clarifying
clinical significance of the gas, respectively. Biogas including breath,
oral, cutaneous and flatus gas analysis is an effective non-invasive technique
for clinical test, therefore those analyzers will be expected to be realized
in practical use in the coming near future.
